La Rioja winery experiences

Rioja is arguably Spain's top wine region, famous for its berry-scented, barrel-aged red wines created from Tempranillo and Garnacha grapes. Situated between the cities of Haro and Alfaro, the vineyards follow the Ebro River for around 100 kilometres (60 miles).

All of Rioja's top-tier reds are aged in new oak barrels. Historically, American wood was preferred, but many wineries now employ American and French oak. Traditional Rioja red wines have their characteristic aromas of coconut, vanilla, and sweet spice from American oak aging. The length of time a Rioja wine spends in barrel determines which of the official Rioja age classifications it receives: Joven, Crianza, Reserva, or Gran Reserva.
