New Zealand's North Island winery experiences & wine tours

The North Island of New Zealand is home to several wine regions, including:

  1. Gisborne: Known for its Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer wines, Gisborne is the first region to receive sunlight in the country, and therefore the first to harvest grapes.

  2. Hawke's Bay: Known for its red wines, particularly Syrah and Bordeaux-style blends, as well as its Chardonnay and Viognier.

  3. Wairarapa: Known for its Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay wines.

  4. Martinborough: Known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling wines.

  5. Bay of Plenty: Known for its Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc wines.

  6. Auckland: Known for its Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Viognier wines.

All these regions have a moderate maritime climate and long sunshine hours which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and to develop complex flavors. The North Island regions are known for producing wines that are bright, aromatic and expressive, with a good balance of acidity and fruitiness.
