South Island New Zealand's South Island winery experiences & private wine tours

The South Island of New Zealand is home to several wine regions, including:

  1. Marlborough: Known for its Sauvignon Blanc, which makes up over 70% of the region's total wine production, as well as its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

  2. Central Otago: Known for its Pinot Noir, which is considered some of the best in the world, as well as its Riesling and Pinot Gris.

  3. Nelson: Known for its Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir wines.

  4. Canterbury: Known for its Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling wines.

  5. Waipara: Known for its Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay wines.

  6. North Canterbury: Known for its Pinot Noir, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc wines.

All these regions have a moderate maritime climate, with a mix of soil types, and long sunshine hours which allows the grapes to ripen slowly and to develop complex flavors. The South Island regions are known for producing wines that are elegant, refined and complex, with a good balance of acidity and fruitiness. Some of the notable wineries in South Island include Cloudy Bay, Felton Road, and Ata Rangi.
